Growing up in my house, required all family members to actively take part in living history presentations of the Civil War. In order to properly represent history, items from that era had to be acquired and used as they were used back then. This gathering of items and the going to Civil War re-enactments led to meeting fellow enthusiasts on a regular basis and the exchange of great items relating to the era. Thanks to Pops, we are going to be able to bring you one-of-a-kind letters. Numerous letters from soldiers and their commanders while in camp, in battle, and in some cases, in prison.
These are beautiful unique lots with many very valuable items. One item just happens to be a very authentic FULL ISSUE of the April 15, 1865 New York Herald.
Back in the late 1970's, my father was lucky enough to acquire a collection of hundreds of mid to late 19th century letters, literature, and memorabilia all relating to the Civil War in some fashion. A few the items pre-date 1861, but illustrate what was happening during those times leading up to the start of the conflict. Some of the items he acquired were: enlisted men's and officer's letters to and from home, on both sides of the war; official unit officers vote tabulation sheets, showing who each enlisted man voted for; filled out supply requisition forms; a much sought after Union parole card; and hundreds of other items relating to the Civil War. There are many items that are associated with the Grand Army of the Republic will also be offered. As will be newspapers (Harper's Weekly, New York Herald, and local papers) relative to that period. I remember my two brothers and I helping our father haul the old heavy newspapers out of the Peru Public Library in our hometown of Peru, Illinois. The library was in the process of transferring from hard copy to microfiche and needed to dispose of them. So we took them.
